You can't bring alcohol to the Caulfield Cup. The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) bans alcoholic drinks and commercially packaged drinks of any kind, except those required for infants. All car parks are alcohol-free, and an alcohol-free zone covers the surrounding streets during the Carnival, with substantial fines for breaches (MRC Plan Your Visit). Anyone who appears under 25 will be asked for accepted photo ID before being served (MRC).

The grandstands and track at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne

We write about what's in the glass, not the form guide. Here's what you need to know about drinking at Caulfield on Saturday 17 October 2026.

Can you bring alcohol to the Caulfield Cup?

No. The MRC lists "any alcoholic beverages" first among items guests may not bring. The ban also covers commercially packaged soft drinks, juice and water in bottles or cans. You can bring an empty, non-glass bottle and fill it at the free water stations at every bar.

Can you drink in the car park at Caulfield Racecourse?

No. All car parks are alcohol-free zones, including the Members' car parks. The MRC says the Carnival alcohol-free zone also covers designated streets and the area around the racecourse. Car park pre-drinks are a fine waiting to happen.

Do I need ID to drink at the Caulfield Cup?

If you look under 25, yes. Under Victorian law the MRC asks for accepted photo ID before serving alcohol or issuing an over-18 wristband. Accepted ID:

  • Australian driver licence (physical or digital)
  • Victorian learner permit
  • Victorian Proof of Age card or interstate equivalent (physical or digital)
  • Keypass card
  • Australian or foreign passport
  • Foreign driver licence with a NAATI-accredited English translation
  • Victorian marine licence

Not accepted: photos of ID, student cards and other forms of identification. In the MRC's words: "No ID, no wristband, no alcohol service."

How much is a beer at the Caulfield Cup?

The MRC has published one price: $8.50 Carlton Draught schooners for Members, part of its "Buck The Cost" pricing. It hasn't published General Admission bar prices, so we won't guess. Members can also redeem one complimentary drink per race day from their allocation by scanning their membership card.

What bars are at the Caulfield Cup?

The MRC lists these bars:

  • Medallion Bar (Members): trackside views over the mounting yard and home straight
  • Penfolds Bar, Promenade Level 2 (Members)
  • 1876 (Members): now with a Pub Menu
  • Moët & Chandon Champagne Bar, Members' Front Lawn
  • The Glasshouse: "the punters' favourite post-race venue"
  • The Jockey Club: the hub of General Admission

How to pace a 7-hour race day

Gates open at 10:30am, the Cup jumps at 5:15pm AEDT, and Cassö plays the Main Stage after the last at 5:50pm. That's a long session. Read the ABV on the tap list, alternate with water, and eat something from Food Lane. A mid-strength lager or a session ale makes sense on a 25° sunny afternoon. A 7% hazy IPA does not. Our beer styles pages explain what the letters on the board mean. For the race itself, see the Caulfield Cup race guide.

Getting home

Caulfield Station is directly outside the course, and there's a dedicated Uber and taxi zone. Don't drive if you've been drinking.

A note on the 150th running

The Caulfield Cup was first run in 1879. This year's race is the 150th running and is worth a record $6 million (Racing.com). Expect a big crowd and long bar queues around the Cup at 5:15pm. Buy a round, and a water, before the Thousand Guineas at 3:45pm, then settle in for the main race.
