Forum Upgrade

I have just upgraded the forum, which incidently controls the authentication component of the entire site today to the latest version.

There are a lot of changes as this is a major upgrade and touch wood most things appear to have come across smoothly and correctly. That is, except for the log-in component.
Invision power, the people who make the software in my experience have been quite good at upgrades and I've never had a major problem to date until now.

The primary reason behind this is that Beer Guide was originally built around an early version of ipBoard's authentication module. Which with the new version is a major rewrite, and there are no API's that I can find to leverage off yet. I have a few thoughts so its not the end of the world, but things will be a bit tricky for a while until I sort it out. The forums will still work, but everything else will be dead.

I hope to have them resolved soon, so please be patient in the meantime until its sorted.

Cheers,

Beer Places Directory Ready

As discussed late last year I have completed the Beer Places directory, which is now available for public use.

Essentially what this new feature provides is the following:

A directory of beer "related" places, that are not Breweries. For example Homebrew Stores, Bottle Shops etc..

A collection of information about each place. For example, do they offer Imported Beers or have a Beer Garden.

It is my hope that over time as this new database is populated we will end up with a very useful guide not only for planning potential pubs if travelling, but also a means to make it easier to hunt down that elusive beer your struggling to find.

Once the database reaches a reasonable size (I'll be populating some entries today) I will link it in with the reviews page to replace the "where do you review this beer" component already in place with a drop-down list of all the beer places in the database. This should pin-point an exact location on where someone can purchase a particular beer (draught or otherwise).

If you find any problems, or have any questions just ask - I'd love to hear some feedback.

Cheers!

Website Attacks/abuse

Just a bit of a heads up for everyone, over the weekend our website sustained a little attempted spam and abuse from an overseas group/person.

The positive note is that except for a few bogus beer bottle images uploaded to the website nothing else occurred. They created an account, and then uploaded porn and other useless images to various beers, but I believe I've cleaned these all up. These accounts have since been removed and their ips block, although I assume the ips were dynamic or from a decoy server anyway.

As a result, I've taken the following two steps to help prevent this from occurring in the future.

1. To upload a beer image from now on you will need to have reviewed "x" number of beers. I am not going to share this figure as it may encourage spam reviews. But for those that have been participating in the uploading legitimately already you will not be affected and you'll still be free to upload as desired.

2. I've blocked a huge list of browser agents, that is the unique identifier that a connection sends when it visits a website. The ones I've blocked are a combination of known bogus agents (ie: spam, virus etc..) as well as software designed to scrape or copy the content from webpages so people can display it quickly and easily on their own website.

I don't imagine any of these changes will affect the average user, and if nothing else should ensure that like Rate Beer, we don't end up in the trouble they are experiencing at the moment with the constant attack from hackers.

If you strike any problems please reply to this post, but as I mentioned earlier I doubt anyone who is a legitimate user will even notice the changes.

Cheers!

Bottle Shop Focus Tags

As mentioned earlier I have been working on focus tags which Bottle Shop Owners/Managers can print to hang in their store to highlight or draw attention to particular beers which they are trying to sell, either because they are on special or because it may be their beer of the month (etc..)

This functionality is now complete and there is a new option on every beer information page (the one which has the reviews on it) called: Print Bottle Shop Focus Tags, for an example click here.

Each printable sheet will contain 4 tags and I recommend printing them if possible on thicker card style paper for longevity. Each tag is stamped with the Weighted Rating for the beer, a description of the beer and a recommendation level from the following:
- Avoid
- Recommended
- Highly Recommended
- Do Not Miss This One!

Each level of recommended is also uniquely coloured to help draw attention to the higher ranked beers in your store.

Additionaly each tag has the month of printing stamped on them to help your clients determine how accurate or reliable the score really is.

The tags are designed to be printed with your browser configured to print background colours, but they will still work even if your browser does not allow this setting. If you're not sure how to setup your browser, don't hesitate to ask by posting in the forums here.

As always I'd appreciate your feedback on the tags, and of course if you have any suggestions on how to improve them I'd like to hear about it also.

Shopping List Functionality

I know on a number of occassions I've thought about what beers I wanted to buy as a result of reading someone's review here and then by the time I've gotten to the bottleshop I have forgotten what I wanted.

To try and solve my own problem I have just uploaded some new functionality to the site.

Located in the right hand menu (when you're logged in) is a new option with a shopping trolley to the left of the menu item called: My Shopping List. For example, click to view my own shopping list.

At always, if you have any feedback on the new functionality or encounter any problems please let me know.

I hope others find this useful, as I know I will.

PS - There is also a print option, that way you can easily take the list to the bottl'o with you.

New Layout

It has most definately been a long time coming, but it is finally here. The latest incarnnation of Beer Guide has arrived!

It is my hopes that nothing major is broken but as the entire website, including the database used to record all the data and all the code used to interface with the database, has been rewritten entirely from scratch there is likely to be a niggle here or there.

If you do have any issues, please let me know and I'll fix them up. Also if you have any suggestions for new features don't be afraid to ask.

There is only one feature I haven't implemented yet that will be available by the weeks end and that is the ability to upload photos to the site - for example beer bottle imagery or logos etc.. I'll let everyone know once that is in place.

One new feature requested, which I have implemented is a Brewery Directory which allows you to drill down into seperate Regions, Countries or States (only Australian States at this stage) to find a particular brewery you are interested in - or if you're just interested in seeing whats in a certain place. Another commonly requested feature was a search 'tag' cloud. Basically this is just a cloud which lists the most popular search keywords people are entering. You can find this in the footer of every page of the site and everytime someone performs a search, this is automatically updated.

I hope you all like the new look, and I'd appreciate any feedback if you have any.

Battle Of The Blondes

What I originally thought was quite a niche market and one which probably wouldn't take off all that much has just secured two new comers in:

Woolworths Platinum Blonde and;
Tooheys White Stag

Thats right, two new comers to the Low-Carb genre.

Woolworths' Platinum Blonde aims to capture as much as 10 per cent of the low-carb beer market by the end of this summer (2008). Private label or house brands account for 20 per cent of grocery sales. But unlike imported brands such as Sol and Hollandia, Platinum is the first beer to be brewed just for Woolworths in Australia.

<a href="http://"http://beerguide.com.au/brewery-information/Tooheys"" target="_blank">Tooheys too have added a new low-carb beer to its range – Tooheys New White Stag. Which is a full-strength mainstream beer, yet contains only one-third of the carbohydrates of regular beer.

It appears to be a trend these days to produce low carb beers to reduce Australians' waist lines, will it last or is it just a fad? Only time will tell.

Rsl Loses Smoking Ban Appeal

Registered clubs suffered another blow on Friday (September 19) after the NSW Supreme Court rejected a test case to allow smoking in partially covered indoor areas.

ClubsNSW championed efforts by Dubbo RSL to counter Health Department instructions to ban smoking in a recently refurbished terrace that opened onto a courtyard.

The Dubbo RSL was one of hundreds of registered clubs across the state that collectively invested more than $400 million to refurbish gaming areas to prevent poker machine players from leaving the premises to smoke.

The investments were meant to remedy a shortfall in gaming revenue hat have brought the future of registerd clubs into question since anti-smoking laws were introduced in July last year. It has resulted in the sector posting its worst financial year on record, with revenue down 11 per cent and 25 clubs closing or amalgamating with neighbouring venues.

The court ruled smoking should not be allowed inside the Dubbo RSL’s gaming terrace or TAB outdoor areas because the ceilings were enclosed even though the walls opened up onto outdoor areas.

"If the area in question is not covered by a roof, the opportunity is available for smoke to disperse to the atmosphere," the court ruled. "However, when the relevant place has a roof the smoke may only escape laterally, and the extent of lateral openings becomes the critical issue affecting the healthiness of the premises."

ClubsNSW chief executive David Costello said he was disappointed with the decision, adding that the community benefits of indoor smoking bans would be compromised because smokers in clubs would now be forced onto footpaths. He said he would consult with its legal team before making a detailed comment.

Independent premium beer company St Arnou has extended its national packaged beer distribution and is now available in numerous liquor retailers.

The award-winning range of beers includes St Arnou Premium Blonde and Pilsner, created in authentic European styles.

St Arnou national sales manager for packaged beer, Nick Allardice, said extending the distribution had already been well received by the public.

"The growth in St Arnou packaged nationally is phenomenal. I think five years of ‘tap only’ created a latent demand beyond our expectations," he said.

St Arnou is available from Dan Murphy’s, Vintage Cellars, 1st Choice and certain independent liquor stores.

A magnum of 2004 Coopers Vintage Ale has sold for a record breaking $2100 at an Adelaide auction, the largest amount ever paid for a bottle of Coopers.

The limited edition boxed magnum signed by Tim, Glen, Maxwell and Bill Cooper, was donated to the Brighton Football Club charity fundraiser to help former player Josh Liddy who became a tetraplegic following a tragic accident last year.

The event held on July 6 raised more than $100,000, with proceeds going toward medical expenses and housing renovations for the Liddy family.

Coopers was happy to contribute to the cause by donating the 2004 Vintage, and announced the 2008 Vintage Ale will be released in late August in time for Father’s Day.

In further news for Coopers, the brewer recently opened an office in New York to help drive exports into the US market.
Coopers chairman and marketing director, Glen Cooper, said the move aims to capitalise on America’s growing interest in the brand.

"We have been working with wholesalers on the east and west coast of America for a number of years and they have been urging us to increase our profile in the US," he said. "There is a growing appreciation for our ales in the USA craft beer market which we are keen to push."

Shorts And Yard Glasses To Be Banned?

Draft guidelines released by the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing could radically change the way liquor is promoted in clubs and pubs across the state.

These include the restriction or prohibition of shots, yard glasses and jugs of mixed spirits, happy hours that last for more than two hours and extend past 9:00pm, viral marketing promotions, two for the price of one offers, cocktails named after sexual acts, promotional cards as well as challenges, lotteries and games of skill or chance that involve the consumption of alcohol.

The draft guidelines were designed to reduce harm associated with the misuse and abuse of liquor and encourage responsible attitudes and practices in regard to the promotion, sale and supply of liquor in the state.

They coincide with the July 1 introduction of the NSW Liquor Act 2007, which empowers the Director of Liquor and Gaming to issue guidelines that indicate the kinds of activities and promotions he or she would prohibit or restrict.

Licensees who fail to abide by the new guidelines — once and if they come into effect — will be prosecuted and fined up to $5500.

The guidelines are now open for public consultation. Organisations and individuals interested in making a submission may do so by contacting Robert Hanns on 02 9995 0776. Submissions close on August 31.

Recent Violence Smears Newcastle Hoteliers

A series of pub brawls may have dashed the hopes of a group of Newcastle licensees trying to win an appeal against a 1:00am curfew that went into effect in the NSW city on March 20.

A spokesperson for the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing said the Licensing Court would not comment on the case while it was under deliberation. He said the licensees’ appeal has been adjourned for mention on June 25. A second appeal to stay the curfew until the case is heard has also been set aside for June 16.

Police officers and residents’ groups supporting the lockout said the weekend brawls that resulted in several police officers receiving minor injuries validated the lockout.

But licensees said individuals must take the onus for responsible drinking and that police were ill-equipped to deal with rapidly changing lifestyle and entertainment patterns.

Shadow Police Minister, Mike Gallacher, concurred, saying the brawls highlighted the necessity for Newcastle Police resource to be bolstered in this week’s State Budget.

“It is unacceptable that there were not enough officers available in the Newcastle region to take care of the incident,” he said. “[Premier] Morris Iemma and [Police Minister] David Campbell ‘talk tough’ on this issue but the reality is new laws and harsher penalties are a waste of time unless they can be enforced.”

Editorial addition: This is actually the second or third weekend in a row that clashes with police and violence outside of local pubs in the area have occurred. It is becoming a broken record in the local rag and should be proof enough that the curfew and tax increase on alcopops has done nothing to reduce the impact drunken louts have on the public - but instead increased the incidents in the area.

James Squire To Release Pepperberry Beer

James Squire will release for the winter 10,000 cases of a limited edition James Squire beer flavoured with a native Australian spice — the pepperberry.

James Squire managing director and chief brewer, Chuck Hahn, told TheShout the new product will be included within the James Squire Limited Release range that has previously been used for exploring new flavours and brewing techniques.

Past releases include the aromatic Hop Thief Ale brewed with specially selected hops in celebration of the annual hop harvest, and the Rum Rebellion Porter matured in oaken rum casks.

"It will mainly be off-premise, however there is likely to be a few kegs through the James Squire Brewhouse," Hahn said.

The pepperberry is a spicy berry — not a peppercorn — described as possessing a floral aroma and a smooth heat that distinguishes itself from most other varieties of pepper.

Pepperberries are found in the cool rainforests of Tasmania as well as the high country of Victoria and southern NSW and have evolved from the flora of ancient Gondwanaland. The pepperberry is harvested from a five-metre tree in areas that offer high altitude and high rainfall

Traditionally, pepperberries are used for preparing soup, vinegar as well as seasoning pasta and game, and bleeds a burgundy or rich plum colour when mixed.

300% Beer Tax Threatens Micro Breweries

In the wake of the 70% tax increase on ‘ready to drink’ alcoholic beverages (RTD’s) which has shocked consumers and industry professionals alike, the Rudd government is also set to levy a higher tax on beer and wine. Such an action threatens the future of the local micro brewing industry, according to Snowy Mountains Brewery director Kevin O’Neill.

“This tax comes on top of 50% excise already paid per carton and makes it almost impossible to survive for most in the micro industry. This figure is too high. The bigger breweries may be able to sustain these costs but most small operators will struggle. We should have a form of tax relief whereby the more product made, the more excise paid. That is not the current reality, and to have a 300% increase in tax proposed defies belief”, said Mr O’Neill, who founded the award winning boutique label.

“We already pay CPI excise twice a year so to raise taxes even more so is just asinine” he added.

“If the reason they have proposed this tax is to stem binge drinking, then why forecast a figure of $2billion in revenue raised in 4 years at current drinking levels? It is transparent that the real reason for this proposal is as a revenue raising exercise. This will kill the micro industry because we don’t cut corners, we don’t use inferior adjuncts like cane or corn to offset rising costs.”

“The Labour government is supposed to be the people’s government and look what they are doing to employment with small business. This must discourage investors from being involved with micro brewers because the margins don’t make it an appealing investment”.

It has commonly been said in the industry that 90% of micro breweries collapse in the first three years, according to Mr O’Neill.

“This will make sure that estimation is on the mark if it isn’t already. If the increased prices for barley malt and hops aren’t already challenging the smaller breweries enough, this tax rise will surely place some in jeopardy. This is a band-aid solution from the Rudd government, a great example of smoke and mirrors. People will still continue to buy alcohol, they will just cease to go to the pub or they will buy cheap alternatives with nastier ingredients or make their own, which means the alcohol can’t be regulated. So, two industries will be affected.”

“We try to do the right thing and make a better product with better ingredients, and this is suggested – it is unfathomable.”

Mr O’Neill said beer consumption in Australia is already the lowest since 1961.

“With already elevated living expenses, food costs and interest rates, this tax increase will surely be felt by many consumers and have a negative impact on smaller breweries around the country.”
There was a single review but about a dozen new beers and a few breweries added which aren't on this new server.
I apologise for the issue, however the server migration had to be completed. I had just hoped DNS would updated quicker.

To boost not only the activity at Beer Guide, but more importantly increase the quality and number of reviews we have at Beer Guide we are going to be running a membership drive during the month of May (2008).

We ask that you tell all of your friends about our community and get them to sign up. During the registration process make sure they enter your member/user name in the 'Referrer' option box to ensure your referral counts.

To reward you for helping us build our membership base, the Australian member who refers the most people during May will receive a dozen beers for their trouble. We'd prefer those members you refer remain active, but this will not be enforced. The winner will be revealed at the end of May, and the leaderboard will remain secret till then to make it interesting.

The winner will recieve beers which have been kindly donated by Not Just Wine, an online retailer which specialises in Belgian beer. We are also pleased to announce that recent discussions between myself with Not Just Wine has resulted in them agreeing to assist the website during this and possible future drives and/or competitions by becoming a site sponsor.

In return for their support please visit Not Just Wine, browse their wares, and order some of your favourite beer/s. If something you are looking for isn't on their website do not hesitate to call them or shoot them an email and Don will get back to you rather quickly.

NRL Footy Tipping Competition (2008)

That time is almost here and this year ('08) we'll be running a tipping competition for the NRL season, including the state of origin and finals series.

To join, simply visit www.oztips.com register an account if you do not already have one and join our competition.

The details are as follows:
Comp#: 120922
Password: beer

The rules are a typical straight tipping competition whereby points are allocated for correctly tipping a win or draw. No points will be allocated for those incorrectly tipping, nor where a draw is the result and you didn't tip it.

If you are late joining the competition you will be allocated an average of all scores to date plus you'll be given a bonus of two points to even things out a little better.
If you are late tipping your results on any given week, you'll be allocated the lowest result minus one point as a penalty.

Full instructions on how to Tip can be found on the website by clicking on the 'Help' link in the top header.

I hope everyone has a good time, and hopefully we get a few signups for this comp. Please feel free to pass it on to anyone you think might be interested as it is far from being a private competition - the more the merrier!

Lastly, regarding prizes; I'd like to get the competition open to the public but if there is enough interest for a prize pool (ie: people pay an entry fee and the money is pooled into a prize pool) please let me know before the competition starts in March and I'll work something out.

Cheers!
