With distinct warming properties, Monteith's Winter Ale has been brewed especially for the colder months of winter. Exhibiting a deep red fiery hue Monteith's Winter Ale is made from a combination of five premium malts, with hints of spicy cinnamon, resulting in a rich, bold, malty flavour and velvety smoothness. The cinnamon characters are the perfect balance for the Green Bullet, Super Alpha and Pacific Hallertau hops developing a delicious, spicy, floral aroma. When poured, a creamy collar of foam will form. Monteith's Winter Ale is best served at slightly warmer temperature to enhance the aroma and flavour characteristics of the brew. 8-10 degrees is recommended.

A superb drop with a wonderful caramel nose.Head retention is great and this goes down like a dream.Becareful with it though as it is higher in alcohol than most beers at 6% alc/vol.

I was really looking forward to reviewing this beer for the following two reasons:
1. It is a Doppelbock, traditionally quite a nice beer style;
2. Its a seasonal release, again typically resulting in a good experience.

Like 'ssar' I could not detect any aroma, nothing when I cracked the bottle, nothing when I poured it and nothing when I aggitated the beer slightly to try and release the aroma. To be honest it is the first time I've smelt so little, there is the tiniest hints of malt, but its barely detectable and you wouldn't notice it unless you are looking for it.

Appearance wise it is dark with a dark red tint easily noticeable, even without direct light and quite a light foamy head was produced upon pouring into the glass. Overall nothing spectacular, but all the same it was inviting.

If you have never tasted a Doppelbock before it is a different flavour with very heavy pronounced malt flavours backed up with a high alcohol content which results in a distinct taste. Winter Ale hits the high malt content spot on, and is followed with an spicy kick. Its not a bitterness, but rather spices that result in a bitter-like aftertaste which leaves a dry and unbalanced flavour in your mouth.
Suprisingly the high alcohol content isn't more prominent.

“Monteith’s Warming Cinnamon-Spiced Winter Ale” - Disappointing. A kind of “nothing” aroma to start – quite a let-down when you expect some reasonable smell straight after cracking it. Nothing special nor really distinctive in the taste right throughout and comes through with an aftertaste with a bit of bite but unfortunately a somewhat distasteful aspect. Didn’t realize it was a 6.0% alcohol beer – good to see. Marketed in a 330mL size stubby – 1 point off for that alone (instead of the good 375mL size). The look of the bottle and labelling does look kinda cool in some ways. I would like to try this again sometime to be more sure that there isn’t more to it, but honestly I’ll probably never drink it again.
