Beer Description:
100 years ago Pilseners, Müncheners and Viennese lagers formed a trio of major lager styles brewed in central Europe 100 years ago. Gradually the lighter Pilseners swept all before them and Vienna style beers fell into decline.
Bavarian hops and coloured malts produce a deep copper coloured beer with a firm fruity caramel aroma, a smooth complex malt character and a long crisp clean finish. This beer is slow fermented and coldmatured over long periods to ensure perfect balance and gentle natural carbonation.
Vienna goes with bread and wheat based foods such as pizza and pasta or more midweight dishes like duck or noodle stirfry.

Union is a rather unique Vienna in that it is very dark compared to all those I've tried before so I guess its hard to call upon previous beers for a comparsion.
The aroma is spectacular, its strong, sweet and malty with strong chocolate and coffee aromas easily detectable. This would have to be one of the best smelling dark beers I've drunk recently and I tip my hat to Meantime for producing an aroma I've been trying for a long time to produce consistently in my dark ale/lager homebrew adventures.
Once again though the carbonation of this was off, maybe they 'do it' differently in England but I've had mixed results from Meantime ranging from way over carbonated to this which was practically not carbonated at all.
Basically no head and no bubbles to speak off and the appearance is dark with a slight red hue when held to the light.
The flavour should come with a warning though, it doesn't so please heed mine. If you do not like dry stouts (like Guinness) do not try this beer you will dislike it and you will think the beer is bad. The beer isn't bad, it is a very rich powerful flavour with a fairly intense bitterness that you may not enjoy if you don't like beers of this pedigree.
Union has a very burnt and malty flavour with a yeasty characteristic and a slight smokey aftertaste. The burnt flavours are a little over done though, almost leaning towards a burnt toast taste and I presume this will be a love it or hate it type of beer.
Personally I enjoyed this offering but I'm a Guinness drink. Its not a session beer and should be saved for dessert (think mud cake) where it will match up perfectly despite what the 'official' blurb says to eat it with.
