Coffee bitterness is balanced by vanilla sweetness to create a lingering espresso cum mochca experience that fills the mouth in a way that coffee alone rarely manages. Is it coffee with beer or beer with coffee?
The roastiness of the Fairtrade Arabica Bourbon coffee beans sourced by our friends at Union Coffee Roasters from the Abuhuzamugambi Bukawa cooperative in Rwanda, and the roastiness of the dark barley malts cannot really be pulled apart.
Meantime Coffee is an ideal after dinner digestif, or, if you can't wait, have it with chocolate desserts or tiramisu.

More chocolate than coffee but would be a good beer after a huge steak dinner. My beer poured a bit flat but still drinkable.

| From the moment I poured this Beer I could detect the strong characteristics of Chocolate and Coffee. The chocolate is the primary aroma with expresso-like hints in the background. The appearance is amazing! Very dark with a thick creamy head, although the head disperses fairly quickly it does leave a minor lacing. Perhaps my judgement of the flavour is a little bias as I love coffee, love is possibly an underexaggerated word. Be warned, if you do not like coffee you will probably not enjoy this beer. There is an immediate smooth velvety body once you taste this Porter which reminds me of 'Old Gold' dark chocolate followed by a uniquely coffee bitterness. This bitterness remains as the aftertaste and unfortunately the bitterness looses its coffee flavours as time passes by in the aftertaste. I personally would have preferred the coffee flavour (albeit with the bitterness) as it sort of leans towards a heavily hopped bitterness in place of a coffee bean bitterness. Overall an excellent flavoured Beer and one which I'd certainly buy again, not only for its unique flavour but its appeal to my taste buds. The commercial blurb asks the question is it beer with coffee or a coffee with beer, after having reviewed it I'm leaning on the coffee with beer side as the coffee is too pronounced in my opinion and not enough sweet dark malty flavours. |
