There's a legend behind this beer. The legend starts in 1987 during the defence of the America's Cup when Matilda Bay was brewing and serving a strong ale called Dogbolter at the Sail & Anchor Pub Brewery in Fremantle, Western Australia.
At around the same time another, different, beer was gaining a cult following amongst the Matilda Bay brewers and staff as well as the growing number of Western Australian real beer enthusiasts.
This beer was known as Matilda Bay's Dark Lager. Then, a couple of years later and for a reason known only to a select few, the name of the first beer was transferred to the second.
The recipe was fine-tuned and, in 1989, Dogbolter Special Dark Lager was born. It didn't take long before the Dog was on everyone's lips. The Dog has had a loyal following for many years.
We decided to celebrate the legend by giving it pride of place as a founding member of the Matilda Bay Brewers Reserve range.

Had a schmiddy at the Grand central Platform. It was a nice dark ruby colour, and a decent off-white head. Not too much aroma, and what was there had the scent of a typical lager. tasted like a good lager, but as others have said here, it was nothing special. |

| I must be missing something when I tasted this Beer. It is the Brewers Reserve and has won awards, yet to me it was just another Dark Lager. It was nice and of a high quality, but nothing out of the ordinary and certainly nothing to warrant the high price tag it bought with it. Aroma wise it was a weak chocolate malt with slight coffee or roasted malt scents. Not a lot can be said about its appearance, dark and inviting but a thin vanishing head let it down. The first sip provided a very malty flavour with a sharp toffee aftertaste. Dogbolter is described with a 'bold bitterness' and I'd describe the sweetness as bold rather than the bitterness. Not that this is a bad thing, but the marketing could possibly turn some people off who don't like bitter beers, when this isn't an overly bitter beer. Overall I don't believe it is worth the higher price tag even though it is a good flavoursome beer. |
