The name Sassy Red is not the product of a fevered imagation. It's a tribute to the NZ Saaz hop. A variety used liberally in this very beer. Dead to the please of our brewery finance department we pour bucket loads of pricey NZ Saas hops into Sassy Red at strategic points in the brewing process.

However you can blame the nutty biscuity flavours you detected on your first sip of this aromatic ale on the combination of 5 different malts used.

Pours a beaut copper/bronze colour with a nice sticky candy aroma. Tastes of sweet malt, almost peanut brittle flavours. Quite enjoyable and I could definitely settle into a few of these given the 4.3 ABV

As with most Macs beers I've had from the bottle Sassy Red also features the novelty pull-top style cap. Not only does it make it look good, but its incredibly easy to get into.

As soon as I poured Sassy Red the Saaz hops rose to meet my nose and were very pronounced however as I became more aware of them they were less noticable and there were no further aromas hiding behind them. Given the hype in the 'blurb' on the bottle I was expecting a really strong (or even overpowering) smack from the Saaz.

Of further disappointment was the utter lack of the 5 different malts used in the flavour. It had a smooth delicate biscuit flavour (although very minor and it would be hard to notice if you were drinking this as a session beer) followed by the slightest hint of a sweet malt. Overall the malts were very subtle and were quickly overpowered by the bitterness of the hops producing a nice all round bitter (similar to an English Bitter).

This would make a great session beer I believe as it is not very complex, yet more complex than your average macro-beer and has just the right amount of bitterness in the aftertaste to suit most bitter drinkers.
