I first heard about this seasonal from a friend in Tasmania about a year ago and I was intrigued. I liked Beez Neez Honey Wheat beer, and I loved porters when I was in the states. So the two words appearing next to each other made my mouth water! Of course I couldn't find a bottle anywhere and figured I needed to make a trip down to Tasmania to get one, which wasn't going to happen, so I wrote off ever trying it. That was until one day when I was camping at Minnie Water and happened to walk into the little general store. There in a cooler was a six of J. Boag's Honey Porter! I grabbed it and went to the beer register, and after it was rang up, I was left fiddling for money... lots of it! Those little national park stores really charge a premium when they're the only game for miles and miles around, and they wanted $22 for those six bottles. Since I only had $10 on me, I got two bottles at $4 each. Anyway, on to my review... I brought them back to camp along with ice for the eskie, and let them chill throughout the day. When I did get to opening one toward sunset, it drew a crowd of goannas as they seemed to come out of nowhere and circled the camp. That beer had to be one of the best ones I ever had anywhere! Maybe the setting had something to do with it, but I think it was the beer's merit. A thick woody scent came up at cap opening, followed by the sweet aroma of the Leatherwood honey! There was nothing I didn't like about this brew! When it was gone, I tried my hardest to angle my way to drinking the wife's bottle, but since I loved it so much, she was determined to have one herself. Of course the next day when we were leaving camp, we stopped to get a couple more bottles, but alas, all four were gone. I've never seen it again... |
