Fish Rock beer is brewed under the Reinheitsgebot law of beer brewing. This is the name for the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, where beer is brewed using only four ingredients: malted barley, hops, yeast, and water. No preservatives are used; which means all-natural flavours and no headaches. The Fish Rock selection holds the beautiful mermaid motif and uses iconic Australian fish to represent the individual beers of the hand-crafted preservative free range. A Beer for those who love Mermaids, Fun, Fishing and Beer! A true pilsner style beer, using centuries-old decoction mashing techniques, and incorporating hop flowers from the fields of Zatec. Sweet barley flavours quickly recede, revealing the emphatic spiciness and characteristic aftertaste of the Czech Saaz hops.

Leather Jacket is a true lager style with a clean refreshing taste. The aroma is slightly aromatic, almost fruity and it finishes with a hint of lemon/citrus but with an interesting bitter kick. My first taste was disappointing but when the beer is well chilled things improve dramatically. Surprisingly even though the carbonation appears low the lager has plenty of mouthfeel and body and is very moreish. A great session beer but maybe a tad too dear

A nice fruity aroma with a light straw colour. A upfront flavour that is smooth to the palate with a slight note of bitterness. I will drink more of this in future.

Poured a light straw colour into my 425mL pilsener glass. The head didn't last, and its barely lacing the glass. Adequately carbonated.

Smells of sweet fruits don't overpower the nose, with a slight note of bitterness.

A little bit thinner on the initial taste - bitterness is apparent, not unpleasant. It is however a little thinner than I had expected, and it's disappointing in this regard. Some slight tastes of green herbs and spices which weren't noticed at first.

Probably would be a decent session beer, but I wouldn't actively seek this one out. A reasonable lager.

Yet another discovery at my local bottle shop has lead me to this review of Fish Rock Brewery's Leather Jacket Lager. Quite a fruity aroma, but not as complex as expected. The colour is far to pale and looks like watered down beer, this may in turn turn off some drinkers who may be swayed by such things. The flavour on the other hand is upfront, bold and smooth. A subtle up front malty/barley flavour leads a slightly bitter hoppy aftertaste. The bitterness is good but may be a little strong for some.

Very impressive. The brewers claim this beer to be “Australia’s best Lager” (as voted at the 2006 Australian Beer Awards) and I can honestly see some of the reasoning. A nice aroma to start, followed by an upfront complex flavour and pretty smooth taste. The Pilsner style does show through in a subtle way, and goes well with a pretty solid general taste. Made in a smaller (than 375mL) 330mL size stubby – a point off for that alone. A bit over-priced considering the size of the stubby for mine, but still a great choice in beer for the odd occasion. I will drink more of this occasionally in future.
